The Atlantic is now more likely than not to see an above-average number of hurricanes this year thanks to the unusually hot temperatures in the ocean, according to a forecast from the US National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This is despite the strengthening El Niño climate pattern which usually reduces Atlantic hurricane activity.
